Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled on Thursday at IFA 2010 the Galaxy Tab, releasing the official specs for their first tablet. Another device has been added to the growing tablet market where the fight for supremacy is constant and Samsung Galaxy Tab stands as a rival to the popular Apple iPad.

Official price is still unknown but we know now that the tablet is due to be released on the European markets in mid-September, and U.S. and Asia by year’s end. The size and the specs are just between the Apple iPad and Dell Streak and it comes with interesting features. The official specs unveiled today at IFA 2010 for the Galaxy Tab include a 7-inch capacitive touch screen with 1024×600 Wide Super VGA (WSVGA) resolution, brought to life by Android 2.2 (Froyo) supporting Flash 10.1, 16GB or 32GB of memory, GPS, and integrated sensors, such as a gyroscope, accelerometer, light sensor, and geomagnetic sensor.

Under to hood we can find an ARM Cortex A8 1GHz applications processor connected with a PowerVR SGX540 graphics processor. For those who like to make photos, a 3.2 megapixel camera is available on the back which includes auto-focus and a LED flash and records video up to 720×480. On the front we can find a video chat capable 1.3 megapixel VGA resolution which will make your family and friends smile on the tablet.

The battery life is expected to last an impressive 7 hours of continuous video playback.

Regarding connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy Tab promises Wi-Fi compatibility of to 802.11n, as well as cellular 2.5G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) and 3G (HSUPA 5.76Mbps, HSDPA 7.2Mbps). Carriers have not yet been announced but we already know Vodafone and Verizon are in the game already with the tablet in their inventory.

“Samsung recognises the tremendous growth potential in this newly created market and we believe that the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings a unique and open proposition to market,” said JK Shin, President of mobile communications at Samsung.

“The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been designed to enable consumers to maximise their online experience wherever that may be.”
