While customers of US Cellular look forward to its LTE network launch in a few short weeks, they can get a head start by scouting out the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G mobile tablet.

US Cellular has chosen the tablet to coincide with the March 2012 launch and will follow that with another Samsung product – The Galaxy S Aviator 4G smartphone.

The new 4G network will cover 25 percent of US Cellular’s customers — in parts of the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine, North Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma.

Mary Dillon, president and CEO of US Cellular, said: “This 4G LTE network builds upon our industry-leading network satisfaction and is the only one that comes with a valuable rewards programme and other unique benefits like overage protection and battery swap that make our customers the happiest in wireless.”

The Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association have partnered with Samsung and Verizon to equip the franchise with Galaxy Tablets.

Moving with the times, the Suns are eliminating paper communications on and off the court. Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablets connected to the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will be provided to front office staff, players, coaches and US Airways Center employees. Fans will be guided to their seats via interactive presentations, players will watch team practice videos, coaches will outline plays during the game, management can track scouting reports – plus much more.

Expect to see more NBA teams jump on the bandwagon. But the Suns hope to get that competitive edge starting today.

Samsung is all set to pull out the stops for the Galaxy Note phone-tab on February 5th with a 90-second Super Bowl ad.

Samsung even hired movie director Bobby Farrelly, creator of Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber, to help make the commercial.

The Super Bowl advertisement, part of which was shot with the Galaxy Note’s HD-quality video camera, will expand on “The Next Big Thing” online ad, which pokes fun at Apple fanatics.

Todd Pendleton, Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Telecommunications America said: “The Galaxy Note ushers in the era of truly personalized communications, allowing people to capture, share and create like never before. The game changing Galaxy Note required a launch platform just as significant which is why Samsung chose the largest event in North America to unveil this product – Super Bowl XLVI.”

The commercial will air in Canada and the US during the fourth quarter of the Giants-Patriots game. Samsung said the TV spot will be accompanied by digital and social media campaigns featuring exclusive access to content and giveaways.

In Canada, the Galaxy Note, with its 5.3″ HD Super AMOLED Screen and innovative S pen, will be widely available on February 14th via TELUS, Rogers and Bell. In the US, the popular phone/tablet will be available for pre-order starting February 5th and sold at AT&T and Best Buy stores nationwide beginning February 19th.

In patent disputes, obviously, there are winners and losers.

For those keeping count in Germany, score another win for Apple. On Jan. 31st, the Higher Regional Court in Dusseldorf ruled that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 violates a German anti-competition statute. Previously, the ruling was based on patent infringement but in response to Samsung’s latest appeal on anti-competitive factors, the ruling was revised with a similar result.

Additionally, the court ruled that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 also violates the German law.

But all is not lost in Germany for the electronics giant. The Galaxy Tab 10.1N is still being sold, as Samsung’s modifications were acceptable to Apple and the courts.

The Gerechthof ‘s-Gravenhage court in The Hague dismissed Apple’s latest appeal that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes on its design patents.

Apple was challenging a decision the Dutch court made in August 2011 favoring Samsung.

The Samsung team welcomed the positive outcome: “This ruling again demonstrates that Apple’s products simply do not warrant the intellectual property protections that it believes. Samsung will continue to take all appropriate measures, including legal action, to ensure continued consumer access to our innovative products.”

Samsung will be making a special version of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus specifically for the German market. Of course you realize the Galaxy Tab 7.0N is just to circumvent the sales ban imposed by the courts as a result of the longstanding patent battle with Apple.

So how much different will it be? Aside from a front facing speaker, more curved edges to make the form factor a little different and the choice of white or metallic gray, it’s basically the same.

It will be available for sale near the end of January for a considerable sum of 600 Euros or about $769 USD.

Samsung said on Jan. 11th that three products in the Galaxy smartphone and tablet line were granted the Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 (FIPS) certification.

FIPS is a federally issued, U.S. information security standard certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to devices which meet strict security and interoperability standards.

This means that government agencies and regulated industries, such as financial and health-care institutions, can use the global version of the Galaxy S II smartphone, Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi as well as the 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Verizon Wireless to meet their mobile enterprise needs.

Cho BumCoo, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Solution Team at Samsung said: “Samsung proactively sought FIPS certification to show our current and potential government and business customers that we take their security and interoperability needs seriously. This certification is a testament to the high level of enterprise business-readiness of our premium smartphones and tablets.”

The headline says it all: more than 1 million Galaxy Notes have been shipped globally as of late December 2011.

We don’t have exact shipping numbers from Samsung just yet. Samsung, however, told the media (that) “rapid global sales of Galaxy Note are notable since it is creating a new market for something between smartphone and tablet PC.”

One expects the numbers to stay firm since the ‘tab-phone’ or ‘phablet’ will be available for sale in the US in the next few months. Also of note, is that the Android 4.0 / Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade
is slated this quarter.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt told an Italian journalist: “In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality.”

That’s all it took to come up with a Galaxy Nexus Tablet launch supposedly slated for 2012. It doesn’t even have to be a Galaxy Tablet for that matter since Google has Motorola as a viable option to do the manufacturing.

Which OS will the new tablet sport? You’d have to think it would be Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android. However, six months down the road it could very well be Jelly Bean, right? Let’s just hope they take care with the design elements – nobody needs more patent warfare.

It gets your attention and it does take a good jab at Apple’s attempt to block the sale of Galaxy tablets in Australia. More importantly, as several managers might point out, it turns a negative into a positive.

Tyler McGee Samsung Australia’s Telecommunications VP, told the Sydney Morning Herald: “At the end of the day the media awareness certainly made the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a household name compared to probably what it would’ve been based on the investment that we would’ve put into it from a marketing perspective.”
